Search Engine Lab (SEL) was founded 1995. Its best known product is

which is the leading meta searchengine in Germany. MetaGer has been featured in numerous radio- and television broadcasts and in many computer magazines. Video clips of television presentations are available at http://metager.de/ntv/ (in German).

In addition to meta search engines, SEL develops original search engines for specific areas of interest. A project, which has been funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) was the

which intended to provide detailed information on German research projects and research capabilities to anybody interested. The objective of the search engine was not only to set pointers to text documents but also to let the users find the most relevant institutions with regard to their needs. This project uses exclusively high quality servers selected by BMBF. After the developement at SEL has been finished, it is now run under the resposability of the computer center of BMBF.

Search Engine Projects:

Other search engine projects at SEL include:

  • Search and Query Engine for the EERQI-Project in the 7th Framework Programme of the EU.

  • Clewwa.de
A special search engine for the German "Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL)", developed since Dec. 2007.

  • HannuFind
Full-text indexing of all webservers of the University of Hannover. It is based on a modified Nutch-system.

  • The Assoziator
A main problem of any Internet search is the selection of the best targeting search terms. To give help here we developed a first version of a tool, which gives to any input word(s) the surrounding term environment. Within these output terms the user might then choose much better targeting search words.

  • MESA, the Meta-Email-Search-Agent: an international Meta-Email-Address-Searchengine. This service has been closed down as a result of the activities of the email spammers. Now the URL points to metager.de, which might be used for email address search as well.

  • German-Usenet, a searchengine indexing the newsgroups of the *.de hierachy. It has been closed down by now, because Google offers this service: http://groups.google.com/.
SEL is or has also been involved in numerous smaller projects concerned with specific aspects of search engines. Examples are:

  • MetaWorld: was an international meta-searchengine which in contrast to nearly all of the existing commercial meta-searcheninges fulfilled all criteria of a real meta search. Nevertheless we have closed this service because of the good service of current international meta-searchengines like http://www.vivisimo.com/.

  • Level3, a method for the automatic generation of thematic search engines.

  • MetaGer2, a version of MetaGer focussing at new ranking technology, which does a real-time access and verification of the found documents. The disadvantages of MetaGer2 were the slow Internet connections, which made it unusable for practical daily use around the year 2000, when it was implemented at SEL. Later around 2005 it has been developed in another environment.

A spin-off of SEL is SuMa-eV, an independent non-profit organisation: "Association for the Promotion of Search Engine Technology and Free Access to Knowledge".
